Good To Know: Highly regarded as one of the greatest Barolo producers in Piedmont, the late Aldo Conterno (who passed away recently in 2012) has produced highly sought after and critically acclaimed wines during his lifetime. Apart from his well decorated career in winemaking, Aldo Conterno is also considered to be a Barolo modernist especially when compared alongside his brother Giovanni who is geared towards the tradional style of the Giacommo Conterno estate.
Poderi Aldo Conterno's prized Barolo Bussia 2016 is very expressive and opulent Barolo. A kaleidoscope of floral and spiced aromas emerge on the nose alongside dominant notes of red cherries, wild strawberries and iron minerality. The palate is rich, intense and gorgeously ripe. Dominant red berry notes emerge atop undertones of eucalyptus and oregano. The finish is long and persistent, coating the palate in luxury with intense but brilliantly balanced tannic structure. The wine is drinking well now, but a few more years in the cellar should allow it to bring forth further potential.
Poderi Aldo Conterno was founded in 1969 when Aldo Conterno purchased the Favot estate with along with its prized Bussia holdings. Eight years prior to his purchase, he had managed Giacomo Conterno together with his brother, Giovanni, but left to carve his own path with a more modern approach to his wines.Today, the estate is managed and led by his three sons: Franco, Stefano and Giacomo.
