Good to know: Known for producing immensely structured and long lived wines, Chateau Pontet Canet was classified as a 5eme Grand Cru Classe or 5th growth by the 1855 Classification. Founded by Jean-Francois de Pontet, royal governor of the Médoc, he combined several Pauillac vineyard plots in the 1720s to form what is present day Chateau Pontet Canet. The winery is also known for being the first classified Medoc estate to fully convert into biodynamic agriculture back during their first trial in 2004.
Located in Pauillac, Chateau Pontet Canet has been owned by the Tesseron family of Cognac since 1975. It has since retained its 5eme Grand Cru Classe and is widely known for producing wines that possess classic Pauillac tannic structure which inevitably contributes to their wines' aging potential and power. Apart from this, they were the first classified Medoc estate to convert into 100% biodynamic viticulture apart from already being certified for organic viticulture and production.
Château Pontet-Canet 2005 is a monumental, benchmark Fifth Growth expression hailing from the estate's deep Günzian gravel plateau situated directly across from Mouton Rothschild in Pauillac. Crafted under the transformative vision of Alfred Tesseron and Jean-Michel Comme during an extraordinary, drought-tempered vintage that marked the early vanguard of their conversion to biodynamic viticulture, it is shaped by a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (around 65%) alongside Merlot (around 30%), Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, aged for roughly 16 to 20 months in French oak barrels. The nose is deep, brooding, and intensely multifaceted, revealing aromas of crème de cassis, wild blackberries, and dark plum compote layered over crushed violets, pencil lead graphite, cigar box cedar, damp earth, and dark cocoa. On the palate, it exhibits astonishing concentration and Pauillac pedigree, commanding the mouth with a full-bodied, multi-layered core of dark fruit framed by an immense yet seamlessly fine-grained tannic architecture and vibrant balancing acidity, cruising into an authoritative, expansive finish marked by lingering notes of crushed stones, sweet tobacco, and dried savory herbs.
