Good To Know: Known for producing some of Spain's greatest wines, Dominio de Pingus began as a small property with exceptional terroir and high quality old vines. Their flagship wine, Pingus, comes from two vineyards planted all the way back in 1929 which totals around 4.5 hectares (11 acres). One of those vineyards is situated on gravel and sand over chalky subsoils, while the 2nd vineyard is mostly clay. Yields are extremely limited at just around 2 tons per hectare.
The Pingus 2010 as we tasted in 2020 is still quite young and exceptionally robust. Cellar this wine for at least 5 - 10 more years to truly experience it at its zenith. The nose opens with seductive notes of blackberry concentrate and muddled wild blueberries. Nuances of smoke and toast aromas also emerge alongside gorgeous hints of minerality. The palate is intense, sappy and powerful, filled with incredible notes of black fruits, baking spice, dark chocolate and nuances of coffee and saline minerality. The finish is lengthy and youthful with robust tannins that provide a firm grip on the palate. Allow a few more years to truly experience the wine's elegant yet powerful potential.
Established in 1995, the winery immediately achieved cult status upon receiving high praise from renowned wine critic, Robert Parker. Their tempranillo based wines are known for their density, concentrated black fruit notes and brilliant mineral backbone. Apart from their flagship wine (which releases only 6,600 bottles annually), the estate also produces PSI, which is a more traditional and classic style of Ribero del Duero, aged in cement and large wooden vats with minimal barrique usage.
