Good to Know: Raúl Pérez, a renowned winegrower and esteemed winemaker of global recognition, is widely acknowledged as the pioneer behind the establishment of the new Ribeira Sacra region in Galicia. However, his talent transcends boundaries, as everything he embarks upon flourishes remarkably. Joining forces with Valquejigoso, a distinguished winery in Madrid esteemed for its unwavering commitment to terroir expression, has resulted in an awe-inspiring outcome. Amidst an enchanting landscape, Raúl seized the opportunity to craft his most distinctive rendition of Madrid Garnacha, a grape renowned worldwide for its exceptional palate-pleasing flavors.
Carpetano exemplifies the outcome of this collaborative effort. It is an exquisite Garnacha red wine that stems from well-established vines in the San MartÃn de Valdeiglesias region, nestled in the foothills of the Sierra de Gredos in Madrid. These vines thrive in granitic soils and endure harsh temperature extremes throughout both winter and summer, albeit with consistently low humidity levels. Adhering to responsible agricultural practices, the vines flourish among an assortment of oak trees. Harvested meticulously by hand when fully ripe, the grapes undergo a rigorous selection process right in the vineyard. Once transferred to the winery, the grapes are refrigerated and undergo further meticulous selection, ultimately being gently placed in small cone-shaped tanks and French oak vats using the force of gravity. Utilizing native yeasts, fermentation occurs spontaneously, followed by a maturation period of 12 months within 5,000-litre French oak foudres. Finally, the wine is bottled, presenting a testament to the dedication and craftsmanship involved in its creation.
Given that Raúl has extensive experience as a dedicated winemaker, actively contributing to the creation of over 200 top-tier wines globally, Carpetano serves as his first opportunity to showcase the exceptional qualities of an exquisite, refined, and exceptionally mineral Madrid Garnacha.
