Good To Know: Back in 1982, the two friends Claudio Conterno and Guido Fantino founded Azienda Agricola Conterno Fantino. Now, the company is environmentally sustainable, preserving the biodiversity and care of the land which yields a vineyard which is organically cultivated as certified by CCPB. Their goal is to reduce the negative environmental impact and use of solar panels and geothermal system. The winery also uses a wetland which is used for wastewater purification. Every part is important, from cultivation to production.
The 2020 Conterno Fantino Barolo Ginestra “Vigna Sorì Ginestra” is a powerful yet refined single-vineyard Nebbiolo from Monforte d’Alba’s famed Ginestra cru. Sourced from organically farmed vines planted between 1971 and 1988 at 340–360 m elevation in sand-silt-clay soils, it was harvested in mid‑October and fermented with extended maceration before aging for 24 months in French oak barriques and another year in bottle . The wine presents a deep garnet color and an expressive nose of wild cherry, plum, crushed flowers, mint, and spice, with hints of licorice, pine, and tobacco emerging over time . On the palate, it delivers taut tannins, vivid acidity, and a striking mineral backbone, culminating in a long, structured finish that showcases its classic Barolo pedigree . With critical acclaim—including scores near 96 from Vinous, 97 from James Suckling, and 95 from Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator—it is built for long-term cellaring, with peak drinking expected from 2026 into the 2040s .
