Good to know: Located on the highest point of the Appellation with 24 meters above the sea level, Lagrange’s vineyard spread over an impressive single bloc with 17 different type of soils which is the same as 400 years ago, this is the 1st key point for being able to produce amazing wines. 70% Cabernet Sauvignon 25% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. Lagrange was one of the 1st Chateau which introduce the leaf removal and green harvest in 1985 to improve quality. The 2nd most important point to be able to produce amazing wines is the date of picking and how you manage the sorting and vinification. The 3rd most important point to be able to produce amazing wines is how to manage the blend and the proportion of Grand Vin / Second Wine / Third Wine.
Historically, a large number of Chateaux in the Medoc used to produce white wine for their own consumption or receptions. Château Lagrange was part of them until the beginning of the sixties. The tradition was then revived, and since the 1996 vintage, a dry white wine (AOC Bordeaux) is produced by the estate, under the name "Les Arums de Lagrange". Gentle extraction by pressing in bunches then settling during 12 hours after cold fermentation in French oak barrels 50% and 50% one year old oak. No malolactic fermentation to keep the freshness.
Tuscan tower designed by Louis Visconti was built in 1820. In 1842, a visionary: the Count Duchatel created a drainage system with ceramic for his own use and sold to neighbours because he noticed that grapes were much better on drained soils. He started to use of sulfur to fight oidium and his improvements make Lagrange as 3rd growth in 1855.
In 1983, Keizo Saji, owner of Suntory, purchased the domain with the volunteers of making one of the best wine in Bordeaux preserving the harmony between people and nature… according to the family philosophy. Lagrange is certified HVE 3 and ISO 140001.
