Good to Know: Founded in 1796 and originally a plantation for coffee, sugar cane and cocoa, Santa Teresa gets its name from Count Martín Tovar Ponte, signer of the Venezuelan act of Independence. He named the region Santa Thereza in honor of the saint. During Venezuelan War of Independence, the hacienda suffered extensive damage and it wasn't until 1896 when Gustav Julius Vollmer Ribas, grandson of the general Jose Felix Ribas and originally of German descent, bought the property and started to produce the hacienda's and ultimately, Venezuela's first ever rum in 1896. Today, the company is still run by the family and apart from their world class rums, the company is also known for its societal contributions and projects, especially for their "Project Alcatraz," a rehabilitation project aimed to help youth associated with behavioral problems and gang violence. To date, they have already managed to disband ten notorious gangs and have since continued to contribute in ending youth and juvenile violence.
The Santa Teresa Linaje is gorgeous blended rum that makes use of rums aged 3 to 14 years. It is robust and with an incredible flavor profile that is laden gorgeously with notes of sweet almond, dark chocolate and dried tropical fruits.
