Good To Know: Born from the partnership of Bordeaux giant, Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Napa Valley Legend, Robert Mondavi, Opus One has become one the most famous and collectable wines in the world. It was the first premium California wine sold in Europe, and is one of the original "Cult Cabernets", along the likes of Harlan Estate and Screaming Eagle.

Conceived during the 70s and first realized in 1979, which also happened to be the same year the first vintage of Opus One was bottled. Both the 1979 and 1980 vintages were released to the public in 1984. By then, it had already garnered so much attention and acclaim to the point that a single case of the 1979 vintage had already sold for $24,000 during the first Napa Valley Wine Auction in 1981. The brand grew considerably in the 1990s, especially in the export markets. In 2005, when Robert Mondavi Winery was acquired by Constellation Brands, Opus One eventually became part-owned by the multi-national company.

The 2022 Opus One is a testament to extraordinary vineyard stewardship during one of Napa Valley’s most challenging growing seasons. Defined by an extreme late-summer heatwave right at harvest, the vintage demanded precise, pre-emptive action from winemaker Michael Silacci and his team. By utilizing targeted irrigation and picking selectively between August 24 and September 26, Opus One achieved a masterpiece of remarkable freshness, energy, and poise—defying the heat to produce a vibrant, plush release hailed by critics (earning 97 points from Decanter and 96 points from James Suckling) as one of the great triumphs of the vintage.
On the nose, this elegant blend (80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 6.5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, and 0.5% Malbec) opens with an inviting bouquet of blueberry, cassis, and dried rose petals, layered with notes of graphite, olive, and cigar box. The palate reveals a lively, seamless harmony of bright red fruits, dark cocoa, and subtle orange zest, supported by fine-grained, velvety tannins and a long finish of wet stone, vanilla, and espresso. Exceptionally charming and expressive, it pairs sublimely with prime cuts like a grilled Wagyu ribeye, pan-seared duck breast with a berry reduction, herb-crusted roasted lamb shanks, or rich wild mushroom and truffle dishes.
