Good To Know: Le Macchiole is known for its three varietal wines namely: Paleo (Cabernet Franc), Messorio (Merlot) and Scrio (Syrah). They are known throughout the world as one of the best varietal wine makers in not just Bolgheri, but in all of Italy. Their vineyards have been organically farmed since 2002.

Established in 1983 by a young couple, Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli, Le Macchiole released their first vintage in 1987. This was followed shortly by the release of their now flagship wine, Paleo in 1989. Paleo at that time, was a Bordeaux blend as was the fashion of most wines in the region at that time. In the 90's, Le Macchiole began to move towards the of production of varietal style wines and thus, both Scrio and Messorio were created. Campolmi eventually passed away in 2002, and the estate has since been run by Merli.

First made in 1994, Messorio began as a personal challenge with one of the most common grape varieties not only in Bolgheri, but also throughout the Tuscan coast and worldwide: Merlot. The aim was to select the finest grapes and create a bold wine with a strong character, moving away from the usual soft and expected style often linked to Merlot. Instead, the focus was on crafting a top-quality wine ready to compete. The name "Messorio" alludes to the wheat harvest, a crucial part of the farming cycle.
