Good To Know: Joseph Drouhin is arguably one of Burgundy's most important wine producers. Though famous for several of their Grand Crus and Premier Crus, Joseph Drouhin shines where most Burgundian producers don't, and that is the production of well valued and amazing bourgogne and village level wines from almost every notable plot in Burgundy, apart from their ultra-premium releases. The Drouhins have also recently expanded their venture to Oregon, USA by way of their Domaine Drouhin winery. There, they produce some incredibly unique wines that focus primarily on the amazing terroir of Oregon.
Joseph Drouhin's Clos Saint-Denis 2015 is a brilliant release by one of Burgundy's most iconic producers. An incredible nose of ripe cherries, exotic woods and cigar box permeate the wine's aroma. The palate shows incredible intensity that is well rounded by elegant and precise acidity. Nuances of cranberry compote alongside hints of game and forest mushrooms showcases the wine's complexity even at its youth. Cellared for a few more years will bring out the wine's more serious tertiary notes that can really bring a whole new experience on the palate.
Founded in 1880 in Beaune, the the domaine's rapid expansion occurred in the early 20th century, during the time of Maurice Drouhin. During the 1950's onwards, when Joseph Drouhin took over the reins of the company, the domaine expanded even further and acquired more prestigious plots particularly in Chablis as well as the acquisition of their overseas project in Oregon.
