Good to Know: Azienda Agricola Elvio Cogno started to produce wines to serve tables and hungry patrons at the Ristorante dell’Angelo in La Morra back in 1936. Their family has long cultivated grapevines for generations. The wine produced by the Cogno family performed more than they expected. It not only served their restaurant patrons but also distinguished itself as an excellent wine.

This success brought Elvio Cogno to leave the restaurant business to produce wines in full time. A business partner supported this decision as his wine showed great reputation. A collaboration between Cogno and the Marcarini winery began as this winery have been managing splendid vineyards in Brunate in the town of La Morra. There, they cultivated Nebbiolo for Barolo.

Elvio’s work pushed towards a goal of producing wine of higher quality and developing the potential of wines in Langhe.

Now the hills of the vineyard in Novello have become world-renowned for their history and excellence recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage.

Following Elvio Cogno, Nadia Cogno and Valter Fissore now carries the legacy between four generations of winemakers and vine growers.

Elvio Cogno Barolo Ravera is produced with grapes from the historical cru in Novello. Fine aromas, sapid flavour and great complexity. It has a brilliant garnet red color with orange highlights. It is firm, elegant and potent on the nose. Scents of dog-rose (a wild rose native to Europe), mint and tobacco scents which melds into spices, coffee, liquorice, truffle, leather and minerals. It is a full-bodied wine, rounded bouquet of great structure and balance. A scent of plum jam and withered brambles. It has a persistent chocolaty after taste. Ideal for ageing as it refines its characteristics over the years.

Best served with braised meats, stewed game, roasts and mature cheeses such as Pecorino and Parmigiano Reggiano

Elvio Cogno Barolo Ravera 2023 is a standout expression from one of Novello’s most prized crus, crafted from 100% Nebbiolo grown on limestone-rich slopes at elevations of 320 to 380 meters. Sourced from vines approaching 50 years of age, the wine is vinified with extended maceration and aged in large Slavonian oak casks for around two years, followed by further bottle aging. It opens with expressive aromas of cherry, rose, mint, licorice, and floral spice, while the palate offers a refined balance of red berries, dried herbs, tobacco, and earthy minerality. Medium to full in body, it boasts bright acidity and polished tannins that promise excellent aging potential through the late 2030s or beyond. Though youthful, it is already approachable with decanting and pairs beautifully with hearty Italian dishes like braised meats, mushroom risotto, and aged cheeses. Ravera 2023 captures the elegance, structure, and aromatic depth that define Elvio Cogno’s signature style.
