Good to Know: Azienda Agricola Elvio Cogno started to produce wines to serve tables and hungry patrons at the Ristorante dell’Angelo in La Morra back in 1936. Their family has long cultivated grapevines for generations. The wine produced by the Cogno family performed more than they expected. It not only served their restaurant patrons but also distinguished itself as an excellent wine.
This success brought Elvio Cogno to leave the restaurant business to produce wines in full time. A business partner supported this decision as his wine showed great reputation. A collaboration between Cogno and the Marcarini winery began as this winery have been managing splendid vineyards in Brunate in the town of La Morra. There, they cultivated Nebbiolo for Barolo.
Elvio’s work pushed towards a goal of producing wine of higher quality and developing the potential of wines in Langhe.
Now the hills of the vineyard in Novello have become world-renowned for their history and excellence recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage.
Following Elvio Cogno, Nadia Cogno and Valter Fissore now carries the legacy between four generations of winemakers and vine growers.
Elvio Cogno Barolo Ravera is produced with grapes from the historical cru in Novello. Fine aromas, sapid flavour and great complexity. It has a brilliant garnet red color with orange highlights. It is firm, elegant and potent on the nose. Scents of dog-rose (a wild rose native to Europe), mint and tobacco scents which melds into spices, coffee, liquorice, truffle, leather and minerals. It is a full-bodied wine, rounded bouquet of great structure and balance. A scent of plum jam and withered brambles. It has a persistent chocolaty after taste. Ideal for ageing as it refines its characteristics over the years.
Best served with braised meats, stewed game, roasts and mature cheeses such as Pecorino and Parmigiano Reggiano
The Elvio Cogno Barolo Ravera 2020 is a remarkable expression of Nebbiolo from one of Barolo’s most esteemed crus.
