Good to know Domaine Economou is one of the most sought after producers of Greece for its artisanal wines. Yiannis Economu, the outstanding wine maker has an oenology degree from Milan. He had years of work in Germany, Bordeaux (Chateau Margaux) and Piedmont under the guidance of Nebbiolo maestros. He then returned to Crete, Greece in 1994 where Domaine Economou is now rooted.
Domaine Economou PDO SITIA Antigone 2004 has a hint of red cherry and berry with a bit of herbs and pepper. It has a grapefruit, apple and rose petal scent as well. A deep and elegant character with a great balance. On the palate it has hints of nutmeg, wet leaves, mushroom and red fruits. A refreshing acidity with soft tannins and long after taste.
This wine is a masterpiece. It has a pronounced red fruits, meat, leather, tar, truffle hints. It’s like Barolo, Grand Cru Brugundy and traditional Rioja combined.
Best paired with: Sauteed Shiitake Mushrooms, risotto with mushroom and thyme.
