The estate holds a storied past, named after Connétable Talbot, the Earl of Shrewsbury and esteemed English military leader who served as the governor of Guyenne and met his defeat at the battle of Castillon in 1453.

In 1855, during Emperor Napoleon III's classification of Médoc and Graves growth, Château Talbot was recognized as a fourth classified growth within the Saint-Julien region. Having been under the ownership of the Marquis of Aux for several years, it was eventually acquired by Désiré Cordier in 1918.

In their Grand Guide des Vins de France, Bettane et Desseauve highlight Talbot as exemplifying the ideal of Saint Julien - richly aromatic, incredibly steady, and destined to improve with age. Talbot is renowned for its enduring quality, yet remains approachable and full-bodied from the moment it is released. The wine is distinguished by its velvety, refined tannins, and showcases a lively character with hints of Havana and licorice. Despite its classic appeal, Talbot exudes a welcoming charm and never comes across as severe or unapproachable.
