Good To Know: Producing one of the world's most expensive and highly sought after wines that also defy time, Chateau Latour is one of the leading wineries in the world, both in history and in modern times. Occupied and in operation since 1331, the site formerly functioned as a fort and garrison, tasked with guarding the estuary. Though the original tower, which is also featured on the label, no longer exists, it was formerly designed as a pigeon roost and built around the early 17th century.

Beginning its operation as a winery under the de Segur name, Chateau Latour was also connected to Mouton and Calon Segur around the 1670's and lasted roughly 300 years until the French Revolution. After that era, Latour's holdings were split and was only reunited in 1841. Today, Chateau Latour is owned by Francois Pinault and is part of Groupe Artemis.

Château Latour 2003 is a monumental, profoundly concentrated First Growth expression widely heralded as one of the towering triumphs of Bordeaux's historic heatwave vintage, originating from the estate's revered l'Enclos vineyard set upon deep Günzian gravel over moisture-retaining clay subsoils along the Gironde estuary in Pauillac. Built around a commanding blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (around 81%) alongside Merlot (around 18%) and a touch of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, it was aged in 100% new French oak barrels. The nose is opulent, brooding, and dramatically multifaceted, unfurling with scents of crème de cassis, blackberry compote, and roasted figs layered over Cuban cigar box, crushed graphite, scorched earth, dark chocolate, camphor, and warm exotic spices. On the palate, it harnesses the lavish warmth and extraordinary phenolic density of the vintage while preserving the quintessential architectural power of Latour, coating the mouth with a massive, velvety core of dark fruit supported by immensely ripe, seamlessly integrated tannins and surprising underlying freshness, cruising into an astonishingly persistent, mineral-tinged finish marked by espresso, sweet tobacco, and crushed stones.
