Anselmo Mendes Muros de Melgaço Alvarinho 2024 is a masterful, wood-aged expression of Portugal's finest white grape from the highly coveted Monção e Melgaço sub-region. What truly sets the Muros de Melgaço apart from Mendes' other Alvarinhos is its meticulous aging process; the wine is fermented and aged for six months in French oak barrels with continuous lees stirring (bâtonnage), a technique that imparts a luxurious, creamy texture and profound structural depth without ever masking the varietal's pristine purity. The 2024 vintage—which benefited from highly favorable growing conditions that allowed the grapes to reach an ideal, balanced ripeness—is particularly praised for its remarkable complexity and harmony. In the glass, it reveals elegant herbaceous notes and a striking slate minerality, seamlessly woven with bright, refreshing bursts of lemon and lime. Boasting a lingering, vibrant finish, this beautifully crafted 2024 release is a true gem of Portuguese winemaking that acts as an exceptional pairing for rich, complex seafood or savory rice dishes.
