Established in a restored 12th-century monastery, the winery lies just outside the Ribera del Duero appellation, allowing it the freedom to craft exceptional “Vino de Pago de Sardon del Duero” wines. Its 700-hectare estate is home to meticulously managed vineyards planted with Tempranillo alongside Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot, producing wines of remarkable depth and character.

The 2021 vintage of Pago Valdebellón highlights one of the finest, most balanced expressions of single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from Abadía Retuerta’s chalky limestone-clay soils. Following early winter snows that deeply replenished water reserves, the 2021 growing cycle provided ideal diurnal shifts and moderate summer warmth. This allowed late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon to achieve flawless phenolic maturity while preserving crisp, natural acidity and fresh varietal character. Aged for 16 months in new French oak barrels, this vintage seamlessly marries Old World structure with Spanish generosity, yielding an exceptionally focused, long-lived wine with a cellaring window of 15 to 20 years.

On the nose, the 2021 Pago Valdebellón opens with complex, concentrated aromas of black cassis, ripe dark plums, and black cherries, interwoven with classic varietal nuances of bay leaf, roasted bell pepper, black tea, and cedar. The palate is full-bodied and robust yet remarkably fluid, featuring fine-grained, polished tannins, lively acidity, and a long, savory finish layered with notes of dark cocoa and toasted spice. To balance its depth and structural intensity, pair this wine with côte de bœuf, herb-crusted rack of lamb, pan-seared venison with a red wine reduction, or aged hard cheeses like cured Manchego or sharp Gouda.
