Good to Know: Nestled in the heart of Castilla y León, Abadía Retuerta is a historic Spanish estate where winemaking tradition meets modern innovation. Established in a restored 12th-century monastery, the winery lies just outside the Ribera del Duero appellation, allowing it the freedom to craft exceptional “Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León” wines. Its 700-hectare estate is home to meticulously managed vineyards planted with Tempranillo alongside Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot, producing wines of remarkable depth and character.
Abadía Retuerta Pago Negralada 2018 is a bold, single-vineyard Tempranillo that captures the essence of its vineyard’s gravel and alluvial soil near the Duero river. Aged for over a year and a half in fine French oak, it offers an intense palate of raspberries, red currants, and blackberries woven with herbal and tea-like spices, balanced by minerality, refined tannins, and a long, powerful finish. Rated in the mid-90s by critics, this wine is an excellent match for grilled red meats, game, or hearty stews, and promises to develop further with age
