Good to Know: Nestled in the heart of Castilla y León, Abadía Retuerta is a historic Spanish estate where winemaking tradition meets modern innovation. Established in a restored 12th-century monastery, the winery lies just outside the Ribera del Duero appellation, allowing it the freedom to craft exceptional “Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León” wines. Its 700-hectare estate is home to meticulously managed vineyards planted with Tempranillo alongside Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot, producing wines of remarkable depth and character.
Abadía Retuerta Pago Garduña 2020 is an exquisite single-varietal Syrah from one of Abadía Retuerta’s finest estate plots in Castilla y León. Hand-harvested and meticulously de-stemmed, the wine undergoes ~25 days of maceration followed by 17-20 months in French oak barrels, crafting a full-bodied profile without hardness. Expect intense aromas of black plum, blackberry and violet, layered with spice, toast, and balsamic nuances, and a palate that is polished, expressive, and long: rich yet balanced with refined tannins and lingering depth. With ~14.5% ABV and strong ratings from Parker, Peñín and others, this is a wine built for savoury pairings like grilled or roasted red meats, game, or mature cheeses—and for those who appreciate a bold yet elegant Syrah.
